Neck Tightening

With age, the neck tissues become loose and saggy, sometimes referred to as a “turkey neck.” Some people also store excess fat in their neck, leading to a “double chin.” A neck lift creates a smooth, toned, youthful appearance, which can lead to a striking improvement of the patient’s profile. We like to call it the “Hollywood neck.” This procedure is often paired with other facial procedures such as a facelift.

Almost everybody experiences relaxation in their neck tissues at some point. The platysma muscle, a very thin muscle that covers the more important deeper structures of the neck, begins to relax causing sagging. The platysma muscle is underneath the skin and a layer of fatty tissue. The thickness of the fatty layer varies from patient to patient. Fortunately, a neck lift minimizes these effects by lifting and tightening the soft tissues giving patients a smooth, toned and more youthful-looking neck. It also redefines the jawline leading to a striking improvement of the patient’s profile.

How is a neck lift performed?

Since there are various issues that can be treated with a neck lift, our surgeons develop a custom procedure plan unique to your needs.

A neck lift is performed under local anesthesia with sedation. Tiny incisions will be made underneath your chin and/or behind your ear. The surgeon will work through those incisions to manipulate the platysma muscle before securing it with a suture into its tightened position. If there is excess fat and skin in the area, it will be removed using liposuction. If you wish, the surgeons can use the fat to perform a fat transfer (link to fat transfer page), where they will inject it in areas of your face which have lost volume due to aging. Finally, any excess skin is trimmed. Sutures are used to close the incisions.

What can I expect during recovery for a neck lift?

Bruising, swelling and mild discomfort are common after a neck lift, but will likely resolve fully within 10-14 days. Temporary numbness is also possible. It is important to keep your head elevated as much as possible, even while sleeping, for 2-3 weeks following surgery to help reduce swelling. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 3-4 weeks.
