Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty 101

The nose is one of the most prominent facial features. If it is crooked or out of proportion with the other structures of the face, the nose can distract from the rest of the face. Many times, this affects a person’s confidence and self-esteem. Fortunately, rhinoplasty, also commonly called a nose job, changes the nose’s shape and helps enhance the overall facial features.

Rhinoplasty surgery is an outpatient procedure that can correct a variety of aesthetic problems such as a humped nasal bridge and/or a bulbous tip. It can also change the size of the entire nose or just the nostrils. Some patients seek to have rhinoplasty to correct impaired nasal function such as difficulty breathing and chronic congestion.

While rhinoplasty is often considered one of the more difficult cosmetic procedures, Dallas facial plastic surgeon, Dr. John Standefer, is an expert-trained ENT (Ears, Nose and Throat specialist) and facial plastic surgeon, with over 30 years of experience performing rhinoplasty procedures. He has worked with hundreds of patients to improve the appearance and function of their nose.

Dr. Standefer performs all rhinoplasties using local anesthesia with oral sedation, which is safer and less expensive than general anesthesia. Healing time is generally quicker when local anesthesia is used in place of general anesthesia. Patients don’t experience pain or discomfort during the surgery. After surgery, patients wear a nasal splint for several days. Swelling and bruising around the eyes is common but it begins to subside after a few days. Two to three weeks after the surgery, many patients feel comfortable returning to social activities with no noticeable signs that plastic surgery was completed. Patients can return to strenuous activity three to six weeks after surgery, depending on how fast they are healing.

If you are uncomfortable with the appearance of your nose, but you aren’t ready for a surgical rhinoplasty, Dr. Standefer also offers non-surgical nose jobs using fillers. While the results are not permanent, they have very desirable outcomes! Non-surgical rhinoplasty requires no-down time and it is less expensive than surgical rhinoplasty.
